2022 World Cup Preview – Group A Insight

2022 World Cup Preview – Group A Insight
    11/16/2022 6585

The Netherlands, Senegal and Ecuador join host nation Qatar in Group A. Can the Dutch finally go all the way after finishing as runners-up on three occasions? How will the hosts fare in their debut World Cup? Let’s take an in-depth look at Group A.

    Qatar

    • 2018 World Cup: N/A
    • Best World Cup Performance: N/A
    • Manager: Felix Sanchez
    • FIFA World Ranking: #50

There is no denying that Qatari football has been on the rise in recent years. After winning the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, Felix Sanchez’s side finished third at both the FIFA Arab Cup and CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2021.

Sanchez has been with The Maroon since 2017 and has overseen some impressive results, including recent friendly wins over Honduras, Panama and Albania. However, the hosts will almost certainly struggle to reach the knockouts.

    Netherlands

    • 2018 World Cup: N/A
    • Best World Cup Performance: Runners-Up (1974, 1978, 2010)
    • Manager: Louis van Gaal
    • FIFA World Ranking: #8

The Netherlands boast one of the strongest squads in world football, with superstars like Virgil van Dijk, Matthijs de Ligt, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay expected to take their side deep into the tournament.

Despite reaching three World Cup finals over the years, the Dutch have never managed to lift the famous trophy. After failing to qualify for Russia 2018, they will be desperate to make amends this year.

    Senegal

    • 2018 World Cup: Group Stage
    • Best World Cup Performance: Quarter-Finals (2002)
    • Manager: Aliou Cisse
    • FIFA World Ranking: #18

Senegal head into the World Cup as the reigning champions of Africa, having clinched the AFCON silverware earlier this year. Needless to say, they will be eager to carry their continental form onto the world stage.

Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane has been included in the squad, despite a recent injury scare. Aliou Cisse can also call upon big-name players such as Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gueye and Ismaila Sarr.

    Ecuador

    • 2018 World Cup: N/A
    • Best World Cup Performance: Round of 16 (2006)
    • Manager: Gustavo Alfaro
    • FIFA World Ranking: #44

Ecuador produced an eye-catching qualification campaign to punch their ticket to Qatar, finishing fourth in the CONMEBOL group – two points clear of Peru and three points ahead of Colombia.

The South Americans have qualified for three World Cup overs the years, but have only made it out of their group on one occasion. Can star striker Enner Valencia fire his country to the knockout phase this year?

    Forebet’s Group A Prediction
