Roma could be dangerous opponents for Los Blancos
There won’t be many that make football predictions who will be backing against Real Madrid making it to the last eight of the Champions League. Los Blancos face Roma on Wednesday night in the Stadio Olimpico in the Champions League last 16 first leg.
Like most observers I expect the Spanish side to prevail over the two legs, but in truth Real Madrid’s away form has been unconvincing in recent months. Last time out in a La Liga away game Zinedine Zidane’s team recorded a 2-1 win at Granada, not exactly a spectacular win by any stretch of the imagination.
Roma just seem to have hit form of late, recording four wins on the spin in Serie A after a slightly inconsistent run of form. Luciano Spalletti’s return to the club has seen a change of fortunes and the men from the eternal city.
The Giallorossi were poor in the group stages, but somehow managed to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition having recorded just one win. They also made it through with a goal difference of minus six, by far the worst of any of the remaining 16 teams in the competition.
This game at the Stadio Olimpico gives Roma the chance to establish a lead to take to the Bernabeu for the second leg. Spalletti’s team will need it, as Real are a far different team back in the Spanish capital.
If this was a one-off game, I would not back against Roma gaining a positive result, but Real Madrid have scored an incredible 33 goals in their last six home games. Roma could well win the battle on home soil, but I cannot back against Real blitzing their way to winning the war at the Bernabeu in the second leg.
