Having lost 9 of their last 11 matches in the Championship, Boxing Day’s hosts, Luton Town, find themselves precariously perched just above the relegation zone ahead of the busy festive schedule in what could possibly be a pivotal period in their bid to avoid the drop.
With just one league position and 1 point separating The Hatters from third from bottom Barnsley, it’s imperative that Luton pick up a couple of wins over the Christmas and New Year in order to boost their chances of Championship survival.
However, Luton have picked up just 2 wins during this woeful 11-match period which came in the shape of home wins against Charlton Athletic and Wigan Athletic, but having lost 4 of their last 5 matches which included a heavy 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Brentford, confidence must be fragile at best.
Although they’ve picked up the aforementioned wins over Charlton and Wigan, these victories were against the bottom two form teams in the Championship over the past 8 matches, and they’ll be up against a quality Fulham side who will be desperate to hang onto their current play-off position.
Onto Fulham then, and Scott Parker’s side bounced back from 3 defeats on the trot in the Championship to record what seemed a highly unlikely 2-1 win against 2nd placed Leeds United at Craven Cottage last weekend.
Recent defeats to Bristol City, Preston North End and Brentford had threatened to drop Fulham out of the current play-off reckoning, but the south-west London outfit had other ideas by toppling high-flying Leeds United which will give The Cottagers plenty of confidence ahead of this busy fixture schedule.
Fulham will now make their way to Luton looking to avoid a third away defeat on the trot following the aforementioned losses at Preston and Brentford, but it should be remembered that these opposition currently sit in 5th and 6th place respectively in the Championship.
The visitors have collected wins on the road this season at Huddersfield Town 2-1, Reading 4-1, Birmingham City 1-0 and a 2-1 win at Swansea City, so Fulham will be fairly confident that they can take the spoils at Kenilworth Road on Boxing Day.
With the likes of midfielder Cairney (6 goals) along with forward personnel including Mitrovic (17 goals), Cavaleiro (4 goals) and Kamara (3 goals), Fulham should have too much firepower and quality at their disposal for Luton here.
