Can Wolves Continue Great Form Against Newcastle?

Can Wolves Continue Great Form Against Newcastle?

The final Premier League match of the weekend takes place on Monday night and is between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United at Molineux.

Wolves come into this match in 7th place in the Premier League, which is a great position for a newly promoted team.  They are very unlikely to catch the top six teams but can consolidate their place in the top half of the table with a win.

Newcastle United are still very much in a relegation battle but a win could see them move 5 points clear of the bottom three.

Wolves are in great form at the moment and have remained undefeated in their last five games in all competitions.  Their most recent game was an FA Cup replay at home against Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night and a team which saw a couple of changes in midfield and attack secured a 3-2 win having fallen 2-1 behind.

Trends show Wolverhampton have won their last four home games, with wins over West Ham United and Leicester City in the Premier League adding to the FA Cup success in mid-week plus the FA Cup win over Liverpool.

Wolves kept just one clean sheet across those four home matches but have been scoring plenty of goals.  Wolves have scored 12 goals in their last four home games, averaging 3 goals per match and both teams have scored in three of those four matches.

Newcastle United were defeated 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.  The Magpies held out for much of the game in what was a good defensive showing but a mistake from Martin Dubravka gave Spurs the 3 points.

That result means Newcastle United have won two of their last three Premier League games, with victories coming at home against Cardiff City and Manchester City, both of which were good performances.

However, trends show Newcastle United have won only three of their last twelve Premier League games and three of their last twenty-three away matches in all competitions.  They have kept just one clean sheet in their last seven on the road in the Premier League and have failed to score a goal themselves in two of the last four.

In-fact, Newcastle United have scored just 2 goals in their last four away league games.

Team news and Wolves could be without Diogo Jota who picked up a knock in the league win over Everton.  Ruben Vinagre has been ill and will be assessed closer to the game but they are the only two doubts for the hosts.

Newcastle United are monitoring the fitness of Karl Darlow, Ki Sung-yueng, Rob Elliot, Jonjo Shelvey and Mohamed Diame.  Yoshinori Muto has returned from the Asian Cup and new signing Miguel Almiron could feature.

Wolves maintained their good form with the FA Cup win on Tuesday and will be well rested for this match on Monday night.  Newcastle United will make themselves difficult to break down but Wolves’ home form is good and they should get the win.
