Arsenal host Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday as they aim to continue their great form. The Gunners are undefeated in their last nine Premier League matches and a win could put them in the top four if other results go their way. Wolverhampton, on the other hand, have hit a dip in form.
Wolves had started the season well gaining draws against Everton and Manchester City. However, Wolves are now 11th in the Premier League having lost three consecutive games. Nuno Espirito Santo’s typically strong defence has wavered and the team is now leaking goals. Wolves have allowed six goals in three games and now possess a –1-goal difference.
Wolves had been strolling along picking up points until losing 2-0 to Watford three weeks ago. They followed up the home loss with a 1-0 defeat against Brighton. A valiant fight against Tottenham at home ended in a 3-2 loss, and Santo now needs to stop the bleeding before things get worse. Wolves are just up from the Championship and they were bound to hit growing pains at some point.
The good news is Wolves are still nine points above the relegation zone and just eight from the top five. Their future is in their own hands. Goals have not been plentiful in Wolves’ last five away Premier League matches. There have been under 2.5 goals scored in those games.
Arsenal came from behind to draw with Liverpool in their last Premier League match. It was their second straight draw having ended level with Crystal Palace the week prior. Manager Unai Emery watched his team play well against Liverpool and nearly take all three points. If Arsenal can play like they did against the Reds, then it will be a long afternoon for Wolves.
Although the two teams haven’t met since 2012, Arsenal have won their last six matches against Wolverhampton. The Gunners have outscored Wolves 13-2 in that time while Wolves players have received three red cards.
Arsenal are coming off of a midweek draw against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League. The match was marred by forward Danny Welbeck’s broke ankle. The English forward will be out for the foreseeable future. Wolves are monitoring the fitness of vital midfielder Diogo Jota as he recovers from injury. Jota had started the season well, but did begin to lose form. Santo will hope the midfielder can rediscover form and guide Wolves to a win.
Wolves are not a pushover; however, they are struggling to score goals and keep them out. Arsenal will get the goals they need to continue their unbeaten run and keep pressure on the top four.
