Southampton to continue winless run

Southampton to continue winless run

Southampton host Watford on Saturday in desperate need of points. The Saints have not won in their last seven Premier League matches and sit just one point above the relegation zone.

This season was supposed to see Southampton play far more comfortably and avoid a relegation fight. However, Mark Hughes has been unable to build on Southampton’s late survival from last term. Watford, on the other hand, sit in eighth place just four points outside of the top five. The Hornets have been hot and cold recently, losing twice and winning twice in their last four league games.

Watford have collected seven of 15 points away from home this season. Javi Gracia’s team has posted a +1-goal difference on their travels. Last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle was unexpected, but Watford can rebound. The Hornets have not lost back to back road games this term. Goals have not been plentiful in Watford’s most recent away games. There have been under 2.5 goals scored in seven of Watford's last eight away trips in the Premier League.

Gracia’s team hasn’t played well against Southampton in their last six meetings. The Saints have won three of six while two have ended in draws. The good news for Watford is they took four points from six in last season’s Premier League meetings against Southampton.

Hughes’ team has the third worst home points total in the Premier League. Southampton have collected a mere three points from 15 at home. None of Southampton’s five home matches have ended in a victory. The Saints are one of just two Premier League clubs not to win at home this term. The other is Crystal Palace.

Southampton have scored just one goal in their last six matches. Five times the Saints were shut out by opponents. Surprisingly, that one goal came last weekend against Manchester City courtesy of Danny Ings. The on-loan player has tallied four of Southampton’s seven goals. He is the only Southampton player that looks likely of scoring in games. The Saints have recorded the second lowest goals scored tally (seven), while allowing the fifth most goals in the Premier League (20).

When these two clubs meet at St. Mary’s, there is regularly a lack of goals. In all competitions, Southampton have seen under 2.5 goals in their last four home matches against Watford. Making things worse for Southampton is they are winless in their last seven Premier League games.

Southampton are struggling and their fight for Premier League survival will continue. Watford are playing well and could achieve a Europa League place with more consistency. The Hornets are in better form and will take all three points against Southampton on Saturday. Based on Southampton’s poor goal scoring record, they will be shut out once more.
