Denmark vs Wales Match Preview

This weekend sees a new era for the international game as the UEFA Nations League begins, the 55 member nations of Europe’s governing body embark on a new tournament that will go someway to replacing the meaningless friendlies that we have witnessed in the past.

The competition is split into four levels of which there are then four groups, both Denmark and Wales find themselves in League B not only looking to join Europe’s elite but also hoping to avoid relegation to League C.

However, this game is clouded in an air of uncertainty with Danish preparations up in the air. On paper this looked like it had the potential to be a very close encounter but come kick off it could be a different proposition altogether.

That’s because the Danish squad that represented the country in this Summer’s World Cup have refused to sign a national team agreement with the DBU (Danish Football Association) in a row over commercial rights.

This means that the squad is without players such as Christian Eriksen or Kasper Schmeichel, but not only that it will also mean that any Danish footballers from the top two divisions of the domestic league are also not available for selection.

The game must go ahead as if not Denmark run the risk of being not only kicked out of this tournament but also the forthcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers. Therefore, the DBU have announced that if there is no impasse then they will select players from the third tier of Danish Football.

We could even see the scenario where indoor Futsal players are selected, should this be the case then it is a decision that will play massively in the hands of Wales and the likes of Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale.

Wales manager Ryan Giggs would have come here expecting a tough fixture, but it is fair to say that the proposition has got a lot easier for the former Manchester United legend. So much so, that they are almost in a position where they cannot lose.

Should they have to play a makeshift Danish side then anything less than three points will be a disaster especially when you consider that they will also have to face the Republic Of Ireland in his season’s UEFA Nations League.

Therefore, getting off the best possible start regardless of the quality of opposition is imperative for a Welsh side that failed to build on their relative success in Euro 2016 due to the fact that they did not appear in this Summer’s World Cup.

However, it is something of a new era for this Welsh side as Ryan Giggs picks up where Chris Coleman left off. As usual the focus will be on talisman Gareth Bale who will be licking his lips at the prospect of scoring a fair few goals.

There is still enough time for this crisis to be solved by Denmark, however should it not be fixed before kick-off then it would have to take a huge upset for Wales to not return back home with all three points.
