West Ham vs Wolves – Match Preview

After a Summer of heavy expenditure in East London, it is fair to say that expectations were raised at West Ham. New manager Manuel Pellegrini has spent in excess of £100m as the Hammers look to solidify themselves in the top flight.

However, there start to the season has ultimately be one to forget as they have lost their opening three league outings. A return that currently sees them dead last in the division as we go into the fourth weekend of action.

Saturday sees them play host to another big spending club over the course of the offseason, that being defending EFL Champions Wolves who themselves come here after earning an impressive draw against Manchester City.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men caused a headache for the reigning Premier League champions as they were good value for the point that they picked up at Molineux last weekend and you get the feeling that will not be the last scalp that they claim over the course of this campaign.

Last weekend saw West Ham make the short trip across the capital to face crosstown rivals Arsenal. A game in which they took the lead after Marko Arnautovic’s first half strike. However, that lead only lasted a handful of minutes as Nacho Monreal restored parity.

It was a case that if the Hammers were more ruthless in front of goal, then they would have walked their meeting at the Emirates against Unai Emery’s new look Arsenal. The hosts were often guilty of leaving wide open spaces in defence.

Spaces that West Ham more often than not failed to exploit, add into the mix their own defensive shortcomings and eventually it was the additional quality of the Gunners that shown through as they picked a much needed first win of the season.

While it is something that Wolves are also looking for, their football has been very easy on the eye so far although it has not quite warranted the results they have hoped for. Home draws against both Everton and Manchester City have bookended an away defeat to Leicester.

They were perhaps unfortunate not to get anything from their trip to the King Power Stadium in week 2 of the campaign, and the players know that for all their attacking endeavour they will need to turn that into positive results soon.

Wolves however will fancy their chances of success on Saturday, although at the same time there will be reasons for West Ham to take some positives from their defeat to Arsenal just seven days ago as their performance was better then their first two efforts.

Add a Carabao Cup win in the week to the mix and their optimism of earning a first three points of the season will be high. However, this Wolves unit do look a tough nut to crack and will provide stern opposition.

Much has been made at the fact that the London Stadium is either a help or a hindrance for West Ham. so they cannot necessarily call on home advantage. Therefore, there is every chance this one could end up with the points being shared.
