Will Caen Secure the Point They Need?

The final round of matches in Ligue 1 take place this Saturday and there is all to play for at the bottom of the table.

As things stand, Toulouse are in 18th place and will face a relegation playoff to maintain their position in the French top flight.  Caen are 3 points above them in the safety zone and know a point in their final home match of the season will be enough to secure their future in Ligue 1.

The problem facing Caen is quite significant in that they face champions Paris Saint-Germain in their final game of the season.  Can they cause an upset to avoid relegation?

Caen come into this match in dreadful form and have failed to win any of their last ten games in all competitions, losing eight of them. The only points they picked up have come courtesy of draws with Toulouse at home and Metz away.

This is in stark contrast to their form earlier in the season when Caen were doing well and picking up plenty of points.  Relegation seemed a long way off at the beginning of March but things have changed considerably.

Home form has seen Caen lose three and draw one of their last four matches and one of those defeats came at the hands of upcoming opponents Paris Saint-Germain in the Coupe de France semi-final.

Paris Saint-Germain will want to end their title winning season with a win having gone down 2-0 at home to Rennes last weekend.

There is little doubt PSG have been the top team in France this season but disappointment in the Champions League has cost Unai Emery his job.  Trends show PSG have lost only four of their last fifty-seven Ligue 1 games and they been very dominant.

Away form home, PSG have lost just two Ligue 1 matches this season but have failed to pick up maximum in points in two of their last three away games. PSG have been held to draws at Saint Etienne and Amiens and will need to keep their concentration if they want to take maximum points from this game.

Trends show PSG have scored at least one goal in each of their last fifteen away Ligue 1 matches.

Team news and Caen will be without the injured trio of Enzo Crivelli, Vincent Bessat and Remy Vercoutre.  Ismael Diomande is unavailable having been sent off against Nice but Alexander Djiku and Romain Genevois are available again following suspension.

PSG will travel without Brazilian duo Dani Alves and Neymar plus Marco Verratti who are all injured.  Edinson Cavani should come back into the team having not featured last week and Adrien Rabiot could also make a return to the starting XI.

The result of this match will depend greatly on the team selected by PSG and the attitude of their players.  If they are on their game, PSG should win but with the World Cup fast approaching, their players may take their eye off the ball and that could present Caen with the chance they need to pick up a crucial point.
