    Can Middlesbrough Continue Playoff Surge?

    Can Middlesbrough Continue Playoff Surge?

With international football finishing until the end of the season, all the focus will be on promotion from the Championship for those clubs and fans in the top half of the Championship table.

This weekend is the Easter bank holiday weekend in England and that means matches will be played on Friday afternoon.  The standout fixture must be the meeting between Middlesbrough and Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Riverside Stadium.

Middlesbrough start the match in 6th place and while automatic promotion is too much to ask, the playoffs are very much a reality and win in this game would keep Middlesbrough in the playoff places.

Wolves sit top of the Championship, 6 points clear of second place Cardiff City, who have a game in hand.  This is one of the toughest matches they have left in the run-in and a win would leave Wolves confident of sealing the Championship title.

Middlesbrough come into this match having been held to a 1-1 draw at Brentford in their previous game.  That result means Middlesbrough are undefeated in their last six Championship matches, winning four and drawing two.

The two draws have both came away from home and trends show Middlesbrough have won each of their last four Championship matches on home soil.  There have been wins over Reading, Hull City, Leeds United and Barnsley.

Middlesbrough scored 2 or more goals in each of those four games but also conceded in three of them, making Middlesbrough an exciting team to watch at the Riverside Stadium,

Wolves make the trip north having defeated Burton Albion 3-1 at home in their previous Championship game.  That result sealed two wins in a row at Molineux Stadium following the heavy 4-1 defeat in the derby against Aston Villa.

Wolves have lost only two of their last ten Championship games but both defeats have come away from home against teams currently in the playoff places.  Therefore, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team will need to break that run if they are to pick up maximum points from this game.

However, wins have not been easy to find away from home in the Championship and Wolves have picked up just one win in their previous four attempts and that came at Leeds United, who are in the bottom half of the table.

Trends show Wolves have seen over 2.5 goals in their last four Championship matches.

Looking ahead to the team news and Middlesbrough will be hoping their international stars return without any injuries.  Midfielder Jack Harrison was forced to withdraw from the England Under-21s but Mo Besic and Adama Traore have remained fit with Bosnia and Spain Under-21s respectively.

Wolves will be hoping all their players return from international duty unscathed and if they do, expect them to play using Benik Afobe up-front, with support from Helder Costa and Ivan Cavaleiro.

Wolves have a dreadful record at Middlesbrough and have failed to win there since April 11th, 1951. Middlesbrough are in good form and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see this one end level, with over 2.5 goals scored.
