Dismal Dortmund produce the same poor defensive mistakes against Leipzig

On Saturday evening, Dortmund and RB Leipzig met at Signal Iduna Park in the Bundesliga, in what was an emotional game for the home team, as their stadium was full for the first time in two years.

While the atmosphere was superb, the result was not for BVB, as Marco Rose’s team fell to a 4-1 defeat.

In fairness, Die Roten Bullen were superb in everything they did, as they have been for much of Domenico Tedesco’s short tenure as coach in Leipzig.

For Dortmund, though, it was a case of the same old mistakes being made in defence. It has become a pattern for BVB when facing the better teams in the Bundesliga.

It was the same against Bayern Munich and also Bayer Leverkusen, who also came and put at least three goals past Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park.

This is not a new phenomenon for Dortmund, though, as it has happened consistently for the last few seasons.

Their powder puff defence is one of the biggest factors in BVB failing to win the Bundesliga in recent seasons.

That and the fact that they seem to be unable to take advantage of any slip-ups from Bayern, who look set to clinch their tenth straight Bundesliga title.

The game against Leipzig was always going to be an attacking one, with lots of goals. Die Roten Bullen cut through Dortmund’s midfield and defence like a knife through butter and the home side did little to change their style, even though the problem was obvious.

There needs to be a mental shift from Dortmund, as they have become the sort of team that often plays nice football, but is unlikely to ever be successful because they overplay and quite simply cannot defend against the better teams in the Bundesliga.
