Celta Vigo head into this Saturday’s La Liga clash with high-flying Real Madrid in a mid-table position of 10th place in the Spanish top flight which appears to be just right as the hosts have struggled to convert draws into wins in recent times.
A solid, if rather uninspiring run of results in La Liga has seen Celta Vigo suffer just one defeat out of their last eight matches which came in the shape of a 2-0 defeat away at Valencia but this period has also produced just two wins as well.
Victories over Elche at home and Huesca on the road have been against teams sitting in the bottom four of La Liga and although they’ve also picked up points in five draws on top, these results haven’t been enough to lift Celta Vigo closer to the top six in the division.
Following three defeats on the trot at home to Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo have since tightened up and lost just once in their last nine matches but their record against Real Madrid is a poor one.
The hosts have lost five of the previous six meetings against their visitors.
Celta Vigo are expected to be missing goalkeeper Blanco and midfielder Mor through knee and muscle injuries respectively.
Real Madrid come into this important clash on the back of an impressive midweek 3-1 home win over Italian Serie A side, Atalanta, in the Champions League which not only saw the visitors progress through to the next round of the competition but it also extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine matches overall.
Unlike their hosts, Celta Vigo, Real Madrid have found a way to win in the majority of these recent results as they’ve won seven of these last nine matches which includes winning five of their last seven games in La Liga.
The visitors still find themselves six points off the pace of their rivals, Atletico Madrid, who sit top of the Spanish top flight but they’ll be eyeing off all three points against Celta Vigo this Saturday, especially considering the impressive record against their hosts in previous exchanges.
Having also lost just once on the road all season so far, Real Madrid have continued to impress on their travels too, winning 8, drawing 5 and losing just the one game of their 14 away matches to date.
Indeed, the bigger picture shows that Real Madrid have lost just one of their last 19 matches away from home.
Real Madrid are set to be missing defender Carvajal and attacking midfielder Hazard for this trip, but the likes of creative midfielders Casamiro and Modric will be looking to feed their prolific striker, Benzema (15 goals) here.
Real Madrid have won five of the previous six meetings against Celta Vigo and the visitors should extend their dominance on Saturday.
