Marseille and Montpellier to both score in midweek clash
Olympique Marseille vs Montpellier HSC - 06/01/2021
2895
A top half clash between Marseille and Montpellier is next up as the two teams battle it out for the three points at the Orange Velodrome with just one point separating these two sides who both harbour ambitions of a possible top five finish.
Following a disappointing sequence of three league matches without a win though in Ligue 1, Wednesday’s hosts, Marseille, have dropped down to 5th place in the French top flight after losses incurred against Rennes and Angers (both away from home) and a 1-1 draw at home with Reims.
Before this mini-slump, Marseille had previously strung together an impressive six-match winning streak which had thrust the hosts up into early contention for a possible top three finish.
Although, the hosts have since lost ground and will be heading into this upcoming encounter against Montpellier in a very different state of confidence from that of a couple of weeks ago.
Marseille have lost just one of their seven matches at home to date which was an opening 2-0 loss to Saint-Etienne but in view of recent results the goals market looks appealing here as six of Marseille’s seven home matches have sen both teams score.
Montpellier had also enjoyed a purple-patch of form earlier in the season as the visitors had put together a four-match winning streak during November which included wins against Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux, Strasbourg and Lorient.
However, results thereafter have been less convincing where Montpellier are concerned as they’ve managed to collect just one further win in Ligue 1 from their subsequent five matches overall.
That success came in the shape of a 3-2 win away from home at Lens but defeats against PSG, Metz and Lille (all at home) have pegged them back into 8th place on the French top flight ladder.
Nevertheless, results away from home continue to impress as Montpellier are unbeaten in their last seven matches on the road which consists of four wins and three draws while five of Montpellier’s eight away matches have also seen both teams hit the back of the net.
The previous encounter between these two sides ended in a 1-1 draw back in September of last year, and a similar scoreline could unfold here on Wednesday night with both teams scoring.
