Fiorentina can edge win over Torino in curtain-raiser

Fiorentina will be hoping that they can pick up where they left off at the end of last season’s Serie A campaign and continue their recent winning momentum in Saturday’s opening Serie A fixture against Torino at their Stadio Artemio Franchi.

Fiorentina recorded back-to-back wins in the Italian top flight against Bologna 4-0 at home and a 3-1 win on the road at SPAL to round off their campaign in emphatic fashion, and having produced a successful pre-season, the hosts will be in confident mood for this clash.

Three home wins on the trot over Lucchese, Grosseto and Reggiana in 5-0, 5-1 and 5-1 triumphs respectively will have given the home side a boost ahead of another Serie A campaign where Fiorentina will be looking to achieve a higher league position than last term’s 10th place finish.

Fiorentina ended last season being unbeaten in their final four matches at home and indeed, suffered just one defeat in their last seven matches on home turf.

Onto Torino, and the visitors suffered a particularly lean period towards the end of last season’s Serie A campaign as they picked up just three league wins from their final 19 matches of the season.

All three of these wins were also registered on home turf at their Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino with victories against Udinese, Brescia and Genoa, all of whom finished in the bottom half of Serie A with the latter two finishing in the bottom four of the division.

However, it was Torino’s poor displays and results away from home which really held them back and contributed towards their disappointing 16th place finish at the end of last season, which produced just four wins on the road all term.

The visitors finished the season in dismal form as they failed to win any of their last 10 matches on their travels, a very disappointing sequence of results which included no fewer than eight defeats and no clean sheets during this period.

In addition, Torino conceded 2 goals or more in seven of these 10 away matches, so they’ll be keen to address last season’s defensive shortcomings this time around.

Fiorentina are unbeaten in their last nine meetings at home against Torino and the hosts look better equipped to take the spoils in this season-opener.
