The neutral venue of the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium in Sydney will host Newcastle Jets’s final game of the regular season for The Jets against Wellington Phoenix on Thursday evening with Newcastle no longer having a chance of a top six finish in the A-League.

Newcastle currently occupy 8th place on the A-League ladder although recent results suggest that they could have achieved a spot in the play-offs had they started their revival in the Australian top flight a little earlier in the season.

Early December saw the start of a decline in form for Carl Robinson’s side as they endured a miserable sequence of nine matches without a win and included no fewer than seven defeats, which ultimately put the northern NSW club behind the eight-ball in terms of challenging for a top six finish.

Nevertheless, Newcastle Jets gave it their best shot as they put together an 11-match spell with just one defeat overall which included six victories that was almost enough for them to turn their season around.

Onto Wellington Phoenix and although the venue has changed from the scheduled McDonald Jones Stadium to the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium in Sydney, this clash still represents an away match for Wellington Phoenix who have stumbled in recent matches in the A-League.

Phoenix had earlier enjoyed a four-match winning streak prior to the lockdown with victories collected against Melbourne City, Western United, Central Coast Mariners and Melbourne Victory, but the New Zealand outfit have registered just one win from their last five matches overall.

This downturn in results include the one win against Perth Glory away from home but recent defeats to Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers have made this season run-in in the A-League, a nervy finale for the visitor’s campiagn.

The goals also seem to have dried up for Wellington as each of their last three matches in the A-League have produced under 2.5 goals, with 1-1 draws with both Adelaide United and Brisbane Roar, along with a narrow 1-0 loss on the road at Western Sydney Wanderers.

Wellington know that all three points in Sydney on Thursday night could lift them up into 2nd place and one of the automatic Finals Series spots but they’ll be up against a Newcastle Jets side keen to spoil the party.

A low-scoring affair could therefore unfold on Thursday.
