New-look Atletico Madrid to kick off season with win

Atletico Madrid conceded a La Liga low 29 goals last season, yet still missed out on the title by 11 points. Now, a completely new-look Atletico Madrid kick off the season with the aim of winning the La Liga championship.

Manager Diego Simeone’s team lacked consistency last season as the Mattress Makers lost matches in an uncharacteristic fashion. Goal scoring was an issue for Atletico Madrid in 2018-19 as they scored just 55 times.

Getafe were a surprise package last term. They finished fifth and narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification. In the end, Getafe ended three points behind Valencia.

Atletico Madrid have turned over their playing staff with the big departure being Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona. Centre-back Diego Godin, full-back Felipe Luis, and Rodri also left. The club’s big signing was teen star Joao Felix from Benfica for €126 million.

Getafe’s summer signings have been humbler. In addition, Getafe didn’t have the exciting preseason tour that Atletico Madrid had. It could play to their advantage on Sunday.

Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in their last 16 matches against Getafe. Thirteen of Atletico Madrid’s 16 matches against Getafe ended in victory. All 16 matches between Atletico Madrid and Getafe ended in Simeone’s side keeping a clean sheet.

Atletico Madrid have put a lot of responsibility on Felix. The expensive transfer signing is expected to be a star and must hit the ground running at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

Diego Costa is expected to miss several matches to start the season due to a thigh injury. Forward Angel Correa is suspended for the fixture while Sime Vrsaljko and Borja Garces are both injured.

Getafe manager Jose Bordalas has several injuries to contend with. Nemanja Maksimovic, Filip Manojlovic, Vitorino Antunes, and Amath Ndiaye are all out with injuries. Boradalas’ side should struggle once more against Atletico Madrid despite the host’s player turnover.

Atletico Madrid’s preseason form was sterling. They won six of seven matches with high-profile wins over Juventus and Real Madrid. Although preseason is far different than the La Liga term, Atletico Madrid won’t have any difficulty getting past Getafe.

Simeone’s team has been unbelievable against Getafe in their last 16 matches in all competitions. Getafe have not scored against Atletico Madrid in over 1,440 minutes. Although Atletico Madrid have new players, the result should be the same.

The Mattress Makers will get another clean sheet win with under 2.5 goals being scored. Atletico Madrid will start their title charge in strong fashion.
