Following a 3-0 defeat at Anfield last week, Liverpool have a mountain to climb if they are to overcome Atalanta and reach the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday.
Despite racking up 71% possession and 19 shots in the first leg, Jurgen Klopp’s side failed to make the most of their dominance, with the visitors taking full advantage.

The Reds have now failed to win any of their last three matches across all competitions, with a 2-2 draw against Manchester United preceding the successive losses.
It is also worth noting that Klopp’s men have lost two of their previous three away games in the Europa League, suffering a 3-2 defeat at Toulouse and a 2-1 defeat at Union SG.
That said, Liverpool have scored 11 goals in four Europa League away outings this season (2.8 goals per game), so they will be hopeful of turning things around on Thursday.
Head-to-head: Atalanta and Liverpool have faced each other three times over the years, with La Dea securing two clean-sheet victories in that time.
Still, Klopp’s side can take confidence from the fact that they claimed a 5-0 win over Atalanta in Bergamo back in 2020, showing what they are capable of.
Team news: There are question marks over the fitness of Atalanta duo Jose Luis Palomino and Giorgio Scalvini, who have both missed recent matches through injury.
Liverpool, on the other hand, will be without Joel Matip (knee) and Thiago Alcantara (muscle) for the trip to Italy, while Ben Doak (knee) is a doubt.
Given that the three previous meetings have produced a total of 10 goals (3.3 goals per game), Thursday’s showdown will likely be another eventful encounter.
