Qatar won the 2019 AFC Asian Cup tournament, lifting the trophy for the first time. The Maroons are just four wins away from claiming a second consecutive Asian Cup trophy.

Tintin Marquez’s team will face AFC rival Palestine in the round of 16. Palestine reached the knockout stages in spite of issues back home. They are one of the biggest underdogs left in the Asian Cup.

The team is ranked No. 99 by FIFA, while Qatar are 58th. Palestine qualified for the round of 16 after picking up four points from nine in Group C.

They finished behind Iran and the United Arab Emirates, qualifying as one of the best third-place teams.

Qatar, on the other hand, topped Group A, with three wins from three matches. The Maroons claimed wins over Tajikistan, China, and Lebanon, scoring five times and conceding zero goals.

Palestine could struggle to break down Qatar’s defence in the round of 16. However, the Canaan showed off some goal scoring prowess in the group stage, bagging five goals.

While Palestine’s attack did well, the defence showed signs of weakness, conceding five goals.

It should be noted that Palestine conceded four of their five goals in a 4-1 loss to Iran. The Canaan struggled with one of the AFC’s top sides.

These teams met two times dating back to 2013. Qatar won both matches by a combined score of 4-0. The trends between these teams favours Qatar, who did not concede a goal to Palestine in their last two meetings.

The teams last played in September 2018. There has been a lot of time in between matches between the national teams. Still, Qatar are significantly better in quality.

Al Sadd striker Akram Afif leads Qatar in goals at the Asian Cup tournament. Afif scored three of Qatar’s five goals. He is second in goal scoring statistics at the Asian Cup, trailing goal scoring leader Aymen Hussein of Iraq.

Palestine have had three different scorers at the tournament. Forward Oday Dabbagh leads the team with two goals. Dabbagh plays club football for Belgium’s Charleroi. He is one of just two Palestine players that plays club football in Europe.

Qatar’s team, on the other hand, is made up almost entirely of players competing in the Qatari Stars League.

This is a team with plenty of chemistry due to playing together for club and country. Qatar will fancy their chances of a win and progressing to the quarterfinals.
