The fourth round of the Taca de Portugal will kick off this week. On Tuesday night, Liga de Portugal leader Sporting CP will host Tondela.
The match will pit a Portuguese top flight team against a second division club.
Tondela will have the opportunity to take the scalp of one of Portugal’s big three. It won’t be an easy task, especially with Tondela claiming a mere two wins in the last 15 head-to-head meetings with Sporting CP.
Sixteen teams are left in the Taca de Portugal. The big three of Portugal are still in the competition. Sporting CP have not won the Taca de Portugal since the 2018-19 season.
Tondela reached the final of the Taca de Portugal in 2021-22, losing 3-1 to FC Porto.
Sporting CP are unbeaten in their last six matches versus Tondela in all competitions. The Lions conceded just two goals in those six matches and scored 10 times.
These clubs met as recently as December 23 in the Taca de Liga (League Cup). Sporting won the match 2-1.
The Lions had the game wrapped up after 32 minutes thanks to goals from Daniel Braganca and Paulinho.
But Tondela pulled a goal back with 14 minutes courtesy of Helder Tavares. It wasn’t enough.
Sporting CP have been perfect against Tondela in their last seven meetings at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.
The Lions will go into the game on the back of a three-game winning streak in the Liga Portugal.
The capital club won 5-1 against Estoril last time out. They scored nine goals in their last three games for an average of 3.0 goals per match.
Former Coventry City striker Viktor Gyokeres leads Sporting CP in league goals with 11. He also has eight assists and contributed to 19 of Sporting’s 37 goals.
Tondela are seventh in the second division. The team went unbeaten in their last three league games, with one win and two draws.
Forward Roberto leads Tondela with nine league goals. He is the club’s dangerman in the final third.
Roberto contributed to 35% of Tondela’s goals this season. Twelve of Tondela’s 26 league goals came on the road in the league.
They will be taking a step up in competition against Sporting CP, who conceded just 17 league goals.
Sporting should have little difficulty finding a win against a Tondela side that they dominated in their last 15 meetings. Sporting should improve their record against Tondela to 11W-3D-2L.
