Midweek Coppa Italia action is back with Inter Milan and Bologna set to clash at the San Siro with the Serie A leaders playing hosts to the biggest surprise package in Italy this season with the away team sitting in fourth.

Bologna’s spot in the top four has stunned Italy this season, and they now sit ahead of the champions Napoli, Fiorentina Roma and Atalanta.

In fact, although they are way adrift of the league leaders Inter by 13 points, the club are only behind AC Milan by four points and a battle for a spot in the Champions League for next season is well on track.

This game, however, is a break from Serie A action with this a Coppa Italia round of 16 fixture.

Bologna have also been excellent in this competition, defeating Cesena 2-0 in the first round to kick off their season, as they then went on to beat Hellas Verona 2-0 with finishes from Nikola Moro and Sydney van Hooijdonk.

In league action, Bologna are also on a four-game unbeaten run with wins over Torino, Salernitana and a draw with Lecce before a fabulous win over Roma last weekend that saw Moro score again before an own goal.

As for Inter, it's been one of their best seasons in recent memory. The club head into this one after finishing top of their Champions League group and as the clear favourites to win another Serie A title.

Throughout December, Inter have beaten Napoli in Naples by a stunning 3-0 scoreline, before going on to smash Udinese.

They then went on to draw 0-0 with Real Sociedad and also defeat Lazio 2-0 last weekend. This now means Inter have not let in a goal this month and scored nine times across four unbeaten games.

Back in the Coppa Italia, this will be Inter’s first game of the season in the competition, having made it to the round of 16 as a result of finishing in the top three last Serie A campaign.

These two sides have also met in the league this season in what was a thrilling battle at the San Siro. Inter took a 2-0 lead inside 13 minutes in that game, as Francesco Acerbi scored after 11 minutes before Lautaro Martinez netted after 13 minutes.

Riccardo Orsolini scored a penalty to bring one back soon after, but it was Joshua Zikzee that stole the show with a finish in the second half that earned Bologna a point.
