Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are separated by a solitary point ahead of their pivotal Premier League showdown in North London on Sunday.
While Spurs find themselves fifth in the table – three points shy of the top four – the Magpies occupy seventh place.
Having each suffered a defeat in midweek, Tottenham and Newcastle will both be looking to return to winning ways this weekend. But who will come out on top?
Tottenham suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to West Ham United on Thursday, despite racking up 75% possession and 23 shots on home soil.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have now failed to win any of their previous five matches, recording four defeats as well as a 3-3 draw with Manchester City.
When Spurs avoided defeat in each of their opening 10 games – picking up eight victories in the process – many believed that they could go all the way.
However, Postecoglou has failed to extend his team’s early-season form, meaning Tottenham now find themselves nine points behind table-topping Arsenal.
Newcastle, meanwhile, endured a 3-0 defeat to Everton on Thursday, conceding all three goals after the 79-minute mark to capitulate at Goodison Park.
Eddie Howe’s side have been immense on home soil this season, winning seven of their eight Premier League matches at St. James’ Park.
That said, the Magpies have struggled on the road throughout 2023-24, winning just one of their seven away league games while suffering four defeats.
Although Newcastle have struggled on their travels of late, they can take confidence from the fact that they have lost just two of their last 11 Premier League outings.
Head-to-head: In April, Newcastle humiliated Tottenham at St. James’ Park, thrashing Spurs 6-1 after scoring five goals inside the opening 21 minutes.
When you look at the bigger picture, though, Spurs have only lost three of their previous 12 Premier League meetings with the Magpies.
Team news: Tottenham are currently without Ivan Perisic, Rodrigo Bentancur, Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Ryan Sessegnon, Manor Solomon and Eric Dier.
Newcastle’s injury list is even longer, with Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, Dan Burn, Callum Wilson, Elliot Anderson, Sean Longstaff, Sven Botman, Joe Willock and Harvey Barnes on the sidelines.
Given that both sides have been involved in numerous high-scoring clashes of late, we should be treated to a thriller in North London on Sunday.
Forebet predicts that Tottenham and Newcastle will combine for over 2.5 goals, with the visitors outscoring the hosts.
