Serie A’s Sassuolo will host Serie B’s Spezia on Thursday in the round of 32 in the Coppa Italia. Neither team is having a strong start to their respective league campaigns.

The Coppa Italia is a chance to get away from the pressures of the league. However, a deep run in the cup could harm Sassuolo or Spezia’s chances of surviving a gruelling league season.

Sassuolo are 15th in Serie A ahead of the round of 32 in the Coppa Italia. They went winless in their last four games in the Italian top flight. Sassuolo have played okay at the Mapei Stadium this season, winning two and drawing three of their six league matches.

However, the Neroverdi only scored eight times in their six league home games. Sassuolo reached the round of 32 with a 5-2 win over lower league Cosenza. The lower league club took Sassuolo to extra time, where the Serie A club eventually won.

Spezia are 17th in Serie B and facing a relegation battle in the second division. They recorded just one win from the opening 10 games in the competition, drawing five times and losing once.

The Bianconeri scored just eight goals in their opening 10 league matches. The defence allowed 13 goals to Serie B opponents.

Spezia do go into the cup match in decent form. The team went unbeaten in its last five Serie B games. However, four of those five games were draws. Spezia defeated Venezia to reach the round of 32.

The match finished in a 2-2 draw after extra time and Spezia won 4-3 on penalty kicks.

These teams met as recently as last season in Serie A. Spezia were relegated at the end of the campaign. Sassuolo went to Spezia and left with a 2-2 draw before winning at the Mapei Stadium 1-0 later in the season.

Sassuolo outscored Spezia in their last six matches 12-10. The teams combined for 21 yellow cards and one red card during that time period.

The Neroverdi are led in goals by the duo of Andrea Pinamonti and Domenico Berardi. The pair has combined for 10 goals, five apiece, in all competitions.

Forward Luca Moro leads Spezia in goals with three in all competitions. Scoring is an issue for the Serie B club and a lack of goals should ultimately doom them on Wednesday Thursday night.

Sassuolo should win the Coppa Italia last 32 tie by a score of 3-1. The win will send the Neroverdi into the round of 16 against Atalanta.
