West Ham won four of their last six matches against Everton in all competitions. On Sunday, the Hammers are aiming for a fifth win in seven tries versus the Merseyside club at the London Stadium in the Premier League.
Everton are coming off a 2-0 loss to city rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby. The Toffees held firm throughout but were undone by a handball late in the game. Sean Dyche’s side doesn’t look like a team fighting relegation.
However, Everton’s lack of scoring could doom them as the season carries on. Everton will start round No. 10 in 16th place and three points above the relegation zone. The good news for Dyche is that there are far worse teams in the Premier League than Everton.
West Ham are also coming off a defeat, as they were beaten 4-1 away to Aston Villa. David Moyes’ Hammers went winless in four of their last five Premier League games.
Still, West Ham are ninth in the standings and five points off the top five after nine games. A win over Everton would get West Ham’s season back up and running.
Everton lost on their last two trips to the London Stadium in the Premier League. In 2022-23, West Ham posted a 2-0 home win over the Toffees thanks to two goals from Jarrod Bowen.
The forward is in fine form for West Ham ahead of Sunday’s match. He has six Premier League goals, which accounts for 38% of West Ham’s scoring.
Everton scored the fourth-fewest Premier League goals in the opening nine matches. Just nine goals were tallied.
Six of those nine goals were scored in just two games. Two of Everton’s last five matches saw them held scoreless.
Dyche will be without Ashley Young following his sending-off against Liverpool last weekend. Young was dismissed in the first half for two fouls on Luis Diaz.
Dyche bemoaned the derby’s poor officiating and inconsistent yellow cards after Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate wasn’t sent off for two fouls in the second half.
The Liverpool man stayed on the pitch, helping Liverpool keep their numerical advantage to score late on.
Dele Alli remains out with an injury. Meanwhile, Seamus Coleman and Andre Gomes are both nearing returns from injury but both players may not be completely fit for the fixture.
Moyes could have full-back Aaron Cresswell back in action. Ben Johnson could also return following a groin injury.
West Ham will venture to Greece on Thursday for a Europa League group-stage game against Olympiacos. Moyes may need to rotate the team for Everton’s arrival.
Everton lost their last two games away to West Ham, and on Sunday, the Toffees should lose for a third straight game against the Hammers at the London Stadium.
West Ham should pick up a narrow victory by a 2-1 score. The win should keep West Ham’s early season top-five hopes alive.
