Switzerland will put their unbeaten record in Euro 2024 qualifying on the line when they entertain Group I strugglers Belarus on Sunday.
With six matches in the books, the Swiss find themselves one point clear of second-placed Romania in Group I, although they have a game in hand on the chasing pack.
As for Belarus, they occupy fifth place – nine points shy of Switzerland – having managed to win just one of their seven qualifiers up to now.
Switzerland took four points from a possible six during last month’s international break, drawing 2-2 with Kosovo beating defeating Andorra 3-0.
Having won four and drawn two of their six qualifiers, the Swiss join France, England, Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Romania and Portugal as the only unbeaten teams this campaign.
It is also worth noting that Switzerland have netted 17 goals in six qualifiers (2.8 goals per game), making them the second-highest scorers behind the Portuguese.
Not only have the Swiss bagged over 1.5 goals in each of their six qualifiers, but they have also conceded just five goals, keeping three clean sheets for good measure.
On the flip side, Belarus played out a goalless draw with Romania on Thursday, despite seeing just 32% possession while conceding 19 shots.
Following a goalless draw with Andorra and a 1-0 defeat to Israel last month, Belarus have failed to score in each of their previous three outings.
Due to a record of one win, two draws and four losses, the Belarusians find themselves eight points shy of the automatic qualification spots in Group I.
To make matters worse for Belarus, they have netted a measly four goals in seven qualifiers this campaign, conceding on 11 occasions.
Head-to-head: Switzerland crushed Belarus 5-0 in the reverse back in March, with Renato Steffen scoring a first-half hat-trick in the rout.
In fact, the Swiss have won each of their four previous meetings with Belarus, racking up nine goals (2.3 goals per game) while keeping four clean sheets.
Team news: Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka is set to earn his 118th cap this weekend, with Xherdan Shaqiri, Fabian Schar and Manuel Akanji also expected to start.
Belarus, on the other hand, will likely deploy a 5-3-2 formation, with Vladislav Morozov and Artem Kontsevoy occupying the forward spots.
When you couple Switzerland’s impressive form with Belarus’ poor record in this fixture, all the signs point towards a comfortable home win.
Forebet predicts that Switzerland will extend their unbeaten streak on Sunday, scoring over 2.5 goals while keeping a clean sheet.
