Greece Could End Ireland's Hopes of Qualifying in Dublin
Ireland vs Greece - 13/10/2023
4293
The Republic of Ireland are back in Euro 2024 qualifying action after a dreadful first few games sees their chances of qualification at practically zero ahead of Greece's visit to the Aviva Stadium.
In fact, should Ireland fail to win this game, they will be mathematically incapable of qualifying for Euro 2024 if the Netherlands also win.
In reality, there isn't much hope of qualification anyway in what has been arguably the nation's worst attempt at qualifying this century.
Ireland have just one win on their books from Group B, defeating Gibraltar 3-0 a few matchdays ago.
This has since seen them lose to the Netherlands, France and even suffer a loss to Greece where Nathan Collins scored before a Matt Doherty red card.
Greece still have a chance to qualify, as they are level on points with the Netherlands, although the latter has a game in hand to play.
Nevertheless, with a match against the Dutch to come for them, there is still a great chance for Gus Poyet to get his men to Euro 2024.
Odysseas Vlachodimos of Nottingham Forest will stay in goal here for Greece and there are not many major absentees for Gus Poyet to deal with.
Sheffield United's George Baldock has just nine caps since making the switch to Greece, but he is out injured here.
Kostas Fortounis is also out of action in this one, while Dimitris Limnios is not going to play here with his injury. Celta Vigo's Tasos Duovikas is also out of action.
As for Ireland, captain Seamus Coleman has been out injured for a while and has not made this squad, and his injury in defence is also coupled with an injury to John Egan of Sheffield United.
James McClean has also now retired from international duty after making his last appearance for Ireland in September.
Caoimhín Kelleher has not made the squad, so Southampton's Gavin Bazunu should start in goal.
Callum O'Dowda is another notable absentee in defence, while the poor form of Jeff Hendrick at Sheffield Wednesday has meant he hasn't made the squad, while Robbie Brady is out injured in this one.
Will Keane will be missed up top after a great start to the season with Preston North End, and his injury up top comes alongside Sinclair Armstrong's absence and Aaron Connolly's injury too.
Troy Parrot and Michael Obafemi make up more big names missing from Ireland's side.
Forebet predicts a win for Greece and for the game to see under 2.5 goals.
