Newcastle aiming for a third straight PL win after poor start to the campaign

After a three-match losing streak in which Newcastle United lost to Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton, the Magpies are in form, having won their last two Premier League matches.

On Saturday, Newcastle will welcome Burnley to St. James’ Park, as they seek a third straight Premier League win. It has been a good week for Newcastle already, thanks to a 1-0 win over Man City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Burnley romped to the Championship trophy last season, but this campaign in the Premier League isn’t going well. The Clarets are winless in five matches this season, with one draw and four losses.

Vincent Kompany’s team is having a difficult time finding the back of the net. Burnley scored just four times in the opening five games and conceded 13 goals.

Newcastle, on the other hand, scored 16 goals in their opening six matches. However, eight of those goals were scored a week ago in an 8-0 demolition of Sheffield United.

The last time Newcastle and Burnley met in the league was 2021-22. The Magpies did the league double over the Clarets by a combined score of 3-1.

Newcastle won two of their three matches at home in the league, scoring seven goals and conceding three. Two of those three goals conceded were against Liverpool.

Burnley played just one time on the road this season. The match saw the Clarets secure their only point of the campaign thanks to a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Kompany has several players on the injured list ahead of the trip to Tyneside. Johan Berg Gudmundsson is ruled out with a calf injury. Hjalmar Ekdal is out with a knee injury.

Lyle Foster is suspended for the match and Michael Obafemi is out of action thanks to a thigh injury. Kompany is also without Darko Churlinov. Meanwhile, Benson Manuel Hedilazio could return from an ankle injury to play.

Eddie Howe has even more injury concerns before the match. Harvey Barnes is out with an ankle injury. Joe Willock is still out following a calf injury. Emil Krath will miss the match after suffering a knee injury.

Howe could have the likes of Sven Botman, Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes, Alexandre Isak, Dan Burn, and Martin Dubravka back from their respective injuries and illnesses.

Burnley may have stormed to the Championship trophy last season, but they look like a freshly promoted side currently. Newcastle United should post a narrow 1-0 win to keep their winning form going.
