Lyon Likely to Stroll Past Strasbourg on Day 1 in Ligue 1
2999

Lyon and Strasbourg will aim to move on from a tough season in Ligue 1 last time out with the two clubs set to clash in the opening weekend of action in the French top flight at the Stade de la Meinau.

For the second season in a row, Lyon finished outside of the top five European spots in Ligue 1 by ending up in seventh at the end of the campaign.

Laurent Blanc would fail to rejuvenate the side after taking over midway through the season, as Lyon ended the 2022/23 outing with 18 wins and 12 defeats.

Worse yet, they scored just 65 goals from 38 games and no side in the top seven scored fewer.

Lyon did manage to register wins over the likes of the champions Paris Saint-Germain throughout the season, but after also getting knocked out of the French Cup at the semi-finals stage to Nantes, it ended up being yet another poor season for them where no European football came in.

During preseason, the club went on to beat De Treffers in their first game, but the French giants lost three in a row thereafter with losses to Manchester United, RWDM, Celta Vigo and Crystal Palace.

Ultimately, it was a very poor summer for Lyon.

It's also been a crazy transfer window for Blanc's side.

The club have lost the likes of Romain Faivre, Habib Keïta and Moussa Dembele, which has been a huge hit to the squad.

What's more, Cenk Özkacar and Jerome Boateng have also departed the Ligue 1 side.

On the other hand, Lyon have made many moves in terms of incomings.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has joined on a free from Arsenal, while 12 other names rejoin the club after the end of their loan spells across Europe.

Clinton Mata joins from Club Brugge and Skelly Alvero from Sochaux also make up a decent set of signings for Blanc's side.

As for Strasbourg, they narrowly missed out on relegation last time out with a five point gap in the end over Auxerre.

The club went on to win nine games, lose 16 and draw 13 throughout the season, although their 59 goals let in was the second most for those outside of the relegation spots in Ligue 1.

Strasbourg's major signing has been the addition of Abakar Sylla from Club Brugge and Emanuel Emegha from Sturm Graz.

Forebet predicts a win for Lyon here and for the game to see over 2.5 goals.
