Eibar and Alaves meet in Basque Derby for Segunda playoff semifinal second leg

Eibar and Alaves are fighting to return to La Liga. On Thursday night, the Basque Derby rivals will meet in the second leg of their Segunda promotion playoff series. The first match finished 1-1, with neither side getting the upper hand.
The Gunsmiths ended in the Segunda season on a terrible run of form. They failed to win 10 of their last 11 matches in the league. Despite the poor end to the campaign, Eibar’s strong start to the season prevented them from worrying about dropping out of the top six.
Alaves finished the season in fourth place with 71 points, the same number of points secured by Eibar. Deportivo went unbeaten in their final four matches of the campaign.
They go into Thursday’s semifinal second leg unbeaten in five straight matches in all competitions.
The first leg saw Alaves draw first blood thanks to a ninth-minute goal from Mamadou Sylla. Eibar didn’t take long to pull level, as Stoichkov scored just before halftime.
Eibar’s Anaitz Arbilla was sent off with 18 minutes left on the clock for a second yellow card. Eibar received five yellow cards in the match.
Alaves and Eibar will play for the fourth time this season in league and playoff matches. Deportivo went unbeaten in the three previous games. The teams drew nil-nil in their first Segunda match of the season before Alaves posted a 2-0 home win in the reverse fixture.
The clubs then drew 1-1 in the first leg of their playoff semifinals. Alaves had a losing record in away matches during the regular season. Their 6W-7D-8L record doesn’t bode well for winning at Eibar’s Ipurua Municipal Stadium
Eibar were the Segunda’s fourth-best team at home during the regular season. The Gunsmiths had a record of 11W-8D-2L at home, with a goal difference of +11. Eibar conceded just 36 goals during the season, but Alaves allowed 33 in 42 matches. The teams are quite evenly matched.
Arbilla will miss the match for Eibar due to a suspension. Meanwhile, defenders Daniel Lasure and Garcia de Albeniz will both miss the match through injuries.
Alaves defender Nikola Maras is expected to miss the match. He could miss the Segunda playoff final if Alaves get through.
The fourth Basque Derby of the season between Eibar and Alaves should finish in a drew, with neither side finding the back of the net. The match should end nil-nil after 90 minutes.
