On Sunday afternoon Dortmund visit midtable Mainz in the Bundesliga, as Thomas Tuchel’s side aim to get back into the Champions League spots.
The visitors are not enjoying the best of campaigns and currently sit fifth in the table. Tuchel’s side are one point behind Hoffenheim who occupy the Champions League play-off spots and two points behind Eintracht Frankfurt who are in the last automatic Champions League spot.
BVB are usually the closest team to challenging champions Bayern Munich for the German title. However, Tuchel’s side have struggled for consistency this season in the Bundesliga and are now 12 points behind the Bavarians in the table.
Their priority this season is now finishing in those Champions League berths. BVB’s have won just two of their last six games in the German top-flight, although three of those games finished in draws. Tuchel will be confident of beating his old club in this clash.
Dortmund have a good record against Mainz, having won seven of their last eight games against the home side in all competitions. They have also scored at least twice in seven of their last eight meetings with Mainz.
The home side are currently 11th in the table, but their form has been poor of late, as they have lost four of their last six games in the German top-flight. However, Mainz’s home record is decent, though, with four wins from their last six Bundesliga games on home soil.
Last time out in the Bundesliga, Mainz drew 0-0 at home against Koln. The draw meant that Mainz have failed to score in three of their last four Bundesliga outings.
Mainz boss Martin Schmidt has faced Dortmund in three occasions and suffered defeat in all three meetings. The Swiss boss will be hoping to improve that record in this clash.
Forebet predicts that Dortmund will record a relatively comfortable victory in this clash and move closer to their new objective for the season.
