Real Madrid and Atletico poised to produce cagey El Derbi showdown

Fresh from thrashing Liverpool in the Champions League, Real Madrid host cross-city rivals Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Saturday.

The two sides are separated by 10 points in the La Liga table, with second-placed Real Madrid leading fourth-placed Atletico Madrid.

Given that Barcelona have opened up an eight-point lead at the summit of the standings, there is extra pressure on Real Madrid to succeed this weekend.

Los Blancos came from 2-0 down to crush Liverpool 5-2 at Anfield on Tuesday, with Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior bagging braces.

Real Madrid have now won each of their previous five games across all competitions, with victories coming in the Champions League, Club World Cup and La Liga.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have been especially strong on home soil in recent times, avoiding defeat in each of their last 14 league matches at the Bernabeu.

When you look at the bigger picture, Real Madrid have only lost one of their 18 home games in all competitions this since – picking up 14 wins along the way.

As for Atletico Madrid, they claimed a 1-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao last time out, thanks to Antoine Griezmann’s second-half strike.

Consequently, Atletico head into Saturday’s showdown on a six-game unbeaten run in La Liga, having recorded four wins and two draws since their last league loss.

It is worth noting that Diego Simeone’s men have registered three 1-0 wins across their previous four league outings.

Given that nine of Atletico’s past 10 La Liga encounters have produced under 2.5 goals, we are likely to see a low-scoring clash at the Bernabeu.

Head-to-head: Atletico Madrid have only managed to win one of their last 14 matches against Real Madrid across all competitions.

It is also worth pointing out that 11 of their previous 14 meetings have dished up under 2.5 goals, with eight draws coming during that period.

Team news: Real Madrid look set to be without the injured trio of Ferland Mendy, Aurelien Tchouameni and Mariano Diaz this weekend.

On the flip side, Thomas Lemar is likely to be absent from Atletico Madrid’s matchday squad as he continues to recover from injury.

When you look at the recent history of this fixture, all the signs point towards a low-scoring draw this time around.

Forebet predicts that Real Madrid and Atletico will share the points on Saturday, with a goalless draw looking like the most probable outcome.
