Le Classique takes centre stage in Ligue 1 this weekend, with Marseille hosting Paris Saint-Germain at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday night.

The old rivals occupy the top two spots in the Ligue 1 table, with first-placed PSG leading second-placed Marseille by five points.

Can Marseille reduce PSG’s lead to just two points? Or will the champions flex their muscles and extend their advantage? It’s time to take a closer look at both sides.

Let’s start with the hosts, Marseille, who have won three of their last four league outings, dispatching Nantes, Clermont Foot and Toulouse.

When you look at the bigger picture, OM have won nine of their previous 11 league matches, suffering a solitary defeat in the process.

It is also worth noting that Marseille boast the second-best defensive record in the division, having conceded just 22 goals in 24 games this season.

OM have also enjoyed plenty of success in front of goal in recent times, finding the net in each of their previous 12 Ligue 1 games.

On the flip side, Paris Saint-Germain suffered something of a crisis earlier this month as they recorded three successive defeats in all competitions.

Funnily enough, PSG lost to Marseille in the Coupe de France before falling to Monaco in the league, with a Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich coming shortly after.

However, the Parisians returned to winning ways with a dramatic 4-3 victory over Lille last weekend, meaning they have now won 18 of their 24 league matches this term.

PSG are also the top scorers in the division, having netted a whopping 59 goals this season. That means they average 2.46 goals per game in 2022-23.

Head-to-head: Impressively, PSG have only lost one of their previous nine Ligue 1 matches at the Stade Velodrome.

The Parisians have also won seven of the past nine league meetings between the two sides, with Marseille picking up a solitary victory in that time.

Team news: Marseille will be without Samuel Gigot this weekend as the defender continues to recover from an ankle injury.

As for PSG, they currently have Neymar, Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Renato Sanches and Nordi Mukiele sidelined due to injury.

Although PSG have not been at their best of late, they are expected to rise to the occasion on Sunday and enhance their solid record in this fixture.

Forebet predicts that both teams will score at the Stade Velodrome. However, PSG have more than enough attacking firepower to outscore Marseille.
