The Choc des Olympiques (Clash of the Olympics) takes centre stage in Ligue 1 this weekend, with Olympique de Marseille hosting Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday night.

As we head into the penultimate round of fixtures before the World Cup, fifth-place Marseille and eighth-place Lyon are separated by four points.

Both sides will be eager to secure Champions League football for next season, meaning they result of Sunday’s clash could have a big bearing on the top-four races.

Marseille head into this clash on a poor run of form, having failed to win any of their previous five games in all competitions.

Following a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham in the Champions League on Tuesday, Marseille have lost five of their last seven outings across all competitions.

That said, they have only lost three of their 13 Ligue 1 games this season – picking up seven wins and three draws along the way.

Better still, only the top two sides – Paris Saint-Germain and Lens – have conceded fewer goals than Marseille’s 11 this term.

As for Lyon, they have won six, draw two and lost five of their 13 league games this season – conceding 16 goals in the process.

Thanks to back-to-back victories over Montpellier (1-2) and Lille (1-0), they come into Sunday’s showdown on a two-game winning streak.

However, Lyon have struggled on their travels of late – winning just one of their previous six away games in Ligue 1.

Having failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their past eight away league games, Lyon are expected to concede at least one goal this weekend.

Head-to-head: Believe it or not, Marseille have only managed to win one of their last 15 Ligue 1 meetings with Lyon.

Given that seven of the past ten league meetings between Marseille and Lyon have produced over 2.5 goals, we should see plenty of action this time around.

Team news: Marseille centre-back Eric Bailly could miss Sunday’s clash after limping off the field against Tottenham in midweek.

On the flip side, Lyon will be without injured goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck as he continues to recover from knee surgery.

Although Lyon have claimed the Choc des Olympiques bragging rights on numerous occasions in recent years, Marseille should have enough firepower to gain their revenge on Sunday.

Forbet predicts that Marseille and Lyon will combine for over 2.5 goals, with the hosts coming out on top.
