Sevilla’s poor La Liga start to continue against Atletico
Sevilla FC vs Atlético Madrid - 01/10/2022
2906
Sevilla are 15th in La Liga ahead of round No. 7 in Spain. Los Rojiblancos took just five points from their opening six games and manager Julen Lopetegui is under immense pressure to turn things around.
Lopetegui saw improvement before the international break, as Sevilla took four points from the last two matches. Sevilla still have a way to go to get away from the bottom of the table.
Atletico Madrid will arrive at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan following their 2-1 home loss to Real Madrid in the capital derby. Diego Simeone’s team has had a similarly poor start to the season, although it hasn’t been quite as bad as Sevilla’s.
The Mattress Makers are seventh in the league after six games, with 10 points from 21 points possible.
Atletico are just three points of the top four but cannot afford to drop too many more points. Eight points now separate Atletico from first-place Real Madrid.
Sevilla edged Atletico in the teams’ head-to-head matches over the last six games. Los Rojiblancos won two of the six matches, while three ended in draws. Sevilla are unbeaten in three straight games versus Atletico.
Atletico Madrid fell 2-1 at Sevilla last season. The reverse fixture finished 1-1 in Madrid with neither side able to find a winner.
Simeone will be without defender Mario Hermosa due to a red card ban. Sergio Reguilon will join Hermosa on the sidelines with a hernia. Defender Jose Gimenez is a doubt to play with a back injury.
Sevilla manager Lopetegui could be without two players. Defender Teixeira Marcao is nursing a hamstring injury and is a doubt to make the squad. Forward Jose Manuel Corona is out of action until December with a ligament problem.
Los Rojiblancos scored just seven goals in the opening six games. Oliver Torres and Carmona bagged two goals each. Lopetegui’s team has never scored a lot of goals, but it is struggling more than before under the ex-Real Madrid boss.
Atletico Madrid are not the defensive side previously seen under Simeone. They scored six times in the opening six games. Atletico have scored 10 goals, with Alvaro Morata leading the team in scoring with three.
Sevilla are struggling this season despite a solid head-to-head record against Atletico. Their lack of goals should prevent a win at home against Atletico.
The capital club should post a 2-0 win as Sevilla remain near the bottom of the La Liga standings.
