Marseille seeking sixth straight Ligue 1 win

Marseille are unbeaten in seven Ligue 1 matches this season and are likely the only team that will trouble Paris Saint-Germain in the Ligue 1 title race.

On Sunday, OM have a big test against Rennes at the Stade Velodrome. Rennes are sixth in the standings. The Black and Red started the season slowly but have come alive in recent matches.

Rennes are on a three-match unbeaten run in Ligue 1. Eleven points were picked up from the opening seven matches, and Rennes are eight points off of first-place Paris Saint-Germain and Marseille.

Marseille must win on Sunday to keep pace with Paris Saint-Germain. Olympique will play Paris Saint-Germain on October 16. If OM want a shot at the title, they must stay close to the reigning champions.

The last six matches between Marseille and Rennes were close. Marseille edged the head-to-head record with 3W-1D-2L to Rennes. The home team won the last four matches between these teams. History tells us that Marseille should win on Sunday.

Marseille are coming off a midweek 1-0 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League. OM have zero points from six on offer in the Champions League. Manager Igor Tudor is focusing on the league and Marseille’s form is far better domestically than in Europe.

Olympique have been perfect at home this season. Three wins from three matches have been tallied. Marseille outscored opponents 9-3 in three home matches.

Rennes have two points from nine points on offer away from home. The Black and Red scored just three goals in the opening three road matches. Four goals were conceded by Rennes in their three away fixtures.

Tudor has two players on the injury list ahead of the match. Centre-back Eric Bailly has a thigh injury. He will be out until October. Defender Samuel Gigot has a muscle strain and is a doubt to play.

Rennes manager Bruno Genesio could be without defender Warmed Omari with a groin strain. Forward Arnaud Kalimuendo is a doubt as well following a muscle issue. Midfielder Baptiste Santamaria is out until January with an ankle injury.

Marseille must win this match to keep pace with Paris Saint-Germain. A win would put pressure on PSG, who play against Lyon in the final match of the weekend.

Tudor’s OM should post a sixth straight win in Ligue 1 play at the expense of Rennes. Olympique will move into first place for at least a few hours.
