Southampton can take advantage of Inter’s recent troubles
Southampton host Italian club Inter at St Marys in the Europa League on Thursday, as the home side look to recover from defeat last time out.
The home side's Europa League campaign has been a tale of inconsistency under French boss Claude Puel. A win, a draw and a defeat from Group K perfectly illustrate the Saints mixed fortunes in Europe this season.
The team from the south coast suffered a 1-0 defeat against Inter in their last European game, despite the Nerazzurri being reduced to ten men. The defeat left Puel’s team second in the group on four points.
Southampton looked to have found consistency of late, but the Saints suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Chelsea last time out in the Premier League. The Blues are on a good run of form, though, so there was no shame in the loss.
The visitors have picked up just one victory from their three group games so far this season, which was that aforementioned win in the reverse fixture. The Nerazzurri have lost their other two group games in this competition.
The Italian side are struggling in 12th position in Serie A and earlier this week sacked Dutch boss Frank de Boer. The former Ajax boss had only been in charge of the Nerazzurri since the summer. Despite starting this game as the bottom team in the group, Inter still have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
However, a defeat in this game would make it very difficult for the Nerazzurri to make it to the knockout stages of the competition. A win at St Marys would be an achievement considering the Saints have suffered just one home defeat in their last 13 games in all competitions.
With Inter’s recent struggles, the Saints have a golden opportunity to enhance their chances of making it to the knockout stages with a victory on Thursday night.
