On Tuesday night, Midtjylland and Larnaca go head-to-head in the Champions League second qualifying round first leg, as both teams seek a potentially crucial advantage to take into the tie's second leg.

Midtjylland

The Danish team have already kicked off their new domestic campaign with a 1-1 draw against Randers at the weekend. They had a mixed pre-season, as the home team recorded wins over OB and AAB before a final friendly loss to Belgian side Gent.

Midtjylland are no strangers to the Champions League, having featured in the group stages of the competition in 2020. However, they failed to win any of their games in a group containing Liverpool, Atalanta and Ajax.

Last season the home side made it to this stage of the competition before suffering a 4-0 aggregate defeat and exit at the hands of Dutch team PSV Eindhoven.

The Danes haven’t won a Champions League game in normal time in ten matches.

Larnaca

The Cypriot team warmed up for this potentially crucial clash by mounting a four-game unbeaten run in friendly matches. Jose Luis Oltra’s team has been prolific in pre-season, too, scoring at least two goals in all four of their pre-season games.

AEK are making their debut appearance in the Champions League this season. However, they have featured in European football in seven previous seasons.

They appeared in the Cup Winners Cup in season 1996/97, only to exit the competition at the hands of Spanish giants Barcelona in the first round.

They have also made six more appearances in the Europa League/UEFA Cup. Their best performance saw Larnaca make the competitions group stages in seasons 2011/12 and 2018/19.
