The new 2. Bundesliga season kicks off on Friday, with Kaiserslautern hosting Hannover 96 at Fritz-Walter-Stadion in the curtain raiser.

Hannover finished eleventh last term – ten points clear of the bottom three and 18 points shy of the top three. Needless to say, they will be hoping to improve this season.

As for Kaiserslautern, they gained promotion from 3. Liga. After finishing third in the table, FCK beat Dynamo Dresden 2-0 in the play-offs.

Kaiserslautern won 18 of their 36 league games last season, registering nine draws and nine defeats along the way.

Only first-place FC Magdeburg won more 3. Liga games than FCK last term, while only three sides suffered fewer losses.

It is also worth noting that Kaiserslautern finished the previous campaign with the best defensive record in 3. Liga, having conceded a measly 27 goals – nine fewer than their closest challenger.

Although they had the fifth-best offensive record in the third tier, they will be confident of settling in 2. Bundesliga thanks to their sturdy backline.

Meanwhile, Hannover won just 11 of their 34 league outings last season – recording nine draws and 14 losses in the process.

Only the bottom three teams in 2. Bundesliga suffered more defeats that Hannover in 2021-22, highlighting their struggles.

It is also worth pointing out that only the bottom three sides scored fewer goals than Hannover’s 35 last term.

That said, each of Hannover’s previous seven away league games have produced over 2.5 goals. This suggests that we could see a high-scoring clash on Friday.

Head-to-head: Kaiserslautern have only managed to win three of their past 14 meetings with Hannover in all competitions, suffering ten defeats along the way.

Hannover are currently enjoying a six-game unbeaten streak in this fixture, having claimed five wins and one draw since their last loss against FCK.

Team news: Kaiserslautern will begin the season with injured striker Angelos Stavridis as he continues to recover from an ankle fracture.

As for Hannover, they will be without key attacking midfielder Sebastian Ernst on Friday as he continues to nurse an Achilles tendon rupture.

Although Kaiserslautern will be full of confidence following promotion, there is no hiding the fact that Hannover have dominated this fixture in recent years.

For that reason, Forebet predicts that Hannover will claim all three points on Friday – scoring over 1.5 goals en route to victory.
