Bosnia and Romania seeking improvements in UEFA Nations League
Bosnia-Herzegovina vs Romania - 07/06/2022

Bosnia and Herzegovina did not get off to the Nations League start they would have hoped for. The Bosnians drew 1-1 with Finland on matchday 1 thanks to a second half stoppage-time goal from Smail Prevljak.
Likewise, Romania’s matchday 1 in the UEFA Nations League did not go as planned. The Romanians fell 2-0 to Montenegro. It was their third straight match without a win in all competitions. Romania failed to score in two of their last three games.
Tuesday’s match will be the fifth all time between Bosnia and Romania. The Romanians lead the head-to-head series against Bosnia with 3W-0D-1L. These teams have not met since 2011, however.
Against Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina played a 4-3-3 formation. Striker Edin Dzeko played through the middle of a front three with Miralem Pjanic deployed in the midfield to pull the attacking strings. Head coach Ivaylo Petev is likely to use the same formation against Romania.
Dzeko and Pjanic, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s two highest profile players, should start once more. Prevljak could be given a start following his goal that rescued a point versus Finland.
Romania also played a 4-3-3 formation against Montenegro. While Bosnia have some familiar names to many football fans, Romania’s squad is lacking in star power. One of the most notable names in Romanian football, Ianis Hagi of Rangers, is ruled out with a long-term knee injury.
A large portion of the Romania squad is made up of players competing domestically. George Puscas did not make the squad for the game. The former Reading and current Pisa striker may have been useful to the side.
Florin Tanase was deployed as the team’s striker through the middle of the front three. Having offered little to the attack, Tanase could be replaced in the starting XI. Andrei Ivan played on the right side of the front three, but could be played down the middle versus Bosnia.
Defenders Vlad Chiriches and Adrian Rus are likely to once again play in the centre of Romania’s defence. Razvan Marin is also likely to resume his role in the midfield.
With both sides seeking maximum points in UEFA Nations League B Group 3, this game should be cagey. Neither team wants to fall further behind current group leader Montenegro.
Tuesday’s game should finish in a draw with neither side finding the back of the net. The final score should be nil-nil between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania.
