The penultimate round of the 2021-22 Serie A campaign takes place this weekend. On Sunday, AC Milan welcome Atalanta to the San Siro in a potentially season-defining clash.
As it stands, first-place Milan lead second-place Inter by just two points. Meanwhile, seventh-place Atalanta find themselves ten points outside the Champions League places.
A win for Milan would see them move one step closer to securing a first league title since 2010-11. However, a defeat could prove costly.
It’s fair to say that Milan have enjoyed a hugely successful season. The league leaders have lost just four of their 36 games, picking up 24 wins and eight draws in the process.
Although four sides have scored more goals than the Rossoneri, not team has conceded fewer goals than Milan’s 31.
Stefano Pioli’s men head into Sunday’s clash on a four-game winning streak, having dispatched Genoa (2-0), Lazio (2-1), Fiorentina (1-0) and Hellas Verona (3-1) in recent weeks.
When you look at the bigger picture, Milan have avoided defeat in each of their previous 14 Serie A encounters – securing nine wins and five draws along the way.
As for Atalanta, they are currently enjoying a four-game unbeaten run – following wins over Venezia (3-1) and Spezia (3-1) and draws against Torino (4-4) and Salernitana (1-1).
That said, La Dea have only managed to win four of their previous 16 Serie A outings. Given their finishes in recent years, they have arguably underachieved this season.
Only two sides – Udinese and Genoa – have registered more draws than Atalanta this term, underlining the team’s struggles.
It is worth pointing out, however, that Atlanta are the fourth-highest scorers in the division after scoring 65 goals in 36 outings.
Head-to-head: Milan beat Atalanta 3-2 in the reverse fixture back in October, meaning they have won three of the previous six meetings between the teams.
Atalanta have only managed to win two of their past eight Serie A matches against Milan, conceding over 1.5 goals on four occasions in that time.
Team news: Milan remain without long-term injury absentee Simon Kjaer as the centre-back continues to recover from a cruciate ligament rupture.
On the flip side, Atalanta’s injury list contains Giuseppe Pezzella, Rafael Toloi, Giorgio Scalvini, Duvan Zapata and Bryan Cabezas.
Milan are on a seemingly unstoppable charge towards the title, meaning Atalanta aren’t likely to prevent the Rossineri from securing five straight wins.
Forebet predicts that both teams will score on Sunday. However, Milan are expected to outscore Atalanta.
