Montpellier to sneak win at Clermont

There’s further action from the French top flight on Sunday in Ligue 1 and features this upcoming clash between 17th placed Clermont Foot and 13th placed Montpellier, when the two teams meet at the Stade Gabriel Montpied.
Clermont sit just one league position and two points above third from bottom club, St Etienne, and the relegation play-off spot ahead of this weekend’s action in the French top flight.
But although Clermont hold home advantage for this upcoming clash with Montpellier, the hosts have been struggling for results in recent months.
Clermont have managed to pick up just the one win from their last 10 matches overall in Ligue 1, this coming in the form of a 1-0 win on the road at bottom half opponents, Troyes.
But six defeats within this period have prevented Clermont from being able to pull further away from the relegation zone.
Results on home soil haven’t been much better either as the hosts have collected just one victory from their last 12 games at their Stade Gabriel Montpied, whilst also suffering seven defeats in the process as well.
Sunday’s visitors, Montpellier have also had their own problems in Ligue 1 of late as they’ve registered just then one league win out of their last 10 matches overall, with a 2-0 win away from home at Bordeaux.
However, Montpellier have also tasted defeat on a number of occasions recently as they have lost six of these last 10 games and this has also prevented the visitors from lifting themselves up into the top half of Ligue 1.
Montpellier do have the luxury of knowing that they are safe for another Ligue 1 season though as they hold a commanding 12-point cushion over third from bottom St Etienne and with just three games remaining of this season, Montpellier know they can play with freedom in this Sunday’s clash at Clermont Foot.
This perhaps just as well, as Montpellier have lost six of their last eight games on the road but they have picked up wins along the way at Lorient and Bordeaux so even this modest return may well be enough to give Montpellier the required impetus to get a result this Sunday at the Stade Gabriel Montpied.
Both teams have struggled of late but Montpellier look the more likely to find a way to win here.
