Atletico Madrid will be looking to tighten their grip on a top-four place in La Liga when they face Athletic Bilbao at San Mames on Saturday.
With only five games remaining this season, Diego Simeone’s men find themselves in fourth place – four points clear of fifth-place Real Betis.
Meanwhile, Athletico Bilbao sit eighth – seven points outside the top six and 13 points behind Atletico Madrid.
It wouldn’t be unfair to say that Bilbao have been one of the most inconsistent teams in the Spanish top flight this season.
Having registered 12 wins, 12 draws and nine losses, they look set to miss out on European football next season.
Athletico Bilbao head into Saturday’s clash on the back of a 3-2 victory over Cadiz. It is worth noting, however, that they almost thew away a 3-0 lead.
Unfortunately, Bilbao have only managed to secure back-to-back La Liga wins on three occasions this season.
With that in mind, they could struggle to claim all three points when Atletico Madrid come to town on Saturday.
As for Atletico, they have won 18 of their 33 La Liga games this season – recording seven draws and eight losses along the way.
Although they find themselves 17 points adrift of first-place Real Madrid, they look set to secure Champions League football for next season.
Simeone’s side were held to a goalless draw by Granada last time out, meaning they have managed to win just one of their past three La Liga outings.
When you look at the bigger picture, though, they have won seven of their previous nine league encounters.
Head-to-head: Athletic Bilbao are currently enjoying a three-game unbeaten streak against Atletico Madrid in all competitions.
Given that each of the past seven meetings between Bilbao and Atletico have produced under 3.5 goals, we should see a low-scoring game this time around.
Team news: Athletic Bilbao currently have three players sidelined through injury – Inigo Lekue, Oihan Sancet and Asier Villalibre.
As for Atletico, they will be without Hector Herrera, Jose Maria Gimenez, Joao Felix and Thomas Lemar on Saturday.
This is destined to be a low-scoring encounter between two defensive sides. That said, Atletico should be too strong for Bilbao.
Forebet predicts that Atletico Madrid will keep a clean sheet on their way to dispatching Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
