Egypt and Senegal braced for AFCON final rematch
7438

Egypt and Senegal will meet for a repeat of the Africa Cup of Nations final when they go head-to-head in World Cup qualifying this Friday.

The first leg will take place at Egypt’s Cairo International Stadium, with the second leg set to go down at Senegal’s Stade Me Abdoulaye Wade next Tuesday.

Despite their status among the strongest nations in Africa, one of Egypt and Senegal will not feature at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

As we know, Senegal beat Egypt to lift the AFCON trophy last month. Following 120 minutes of goalless action, Senegal won 4-2 on penalties.

The Lions of Teranga racked up 58% possession and 13 shots on this night. Meanwhile, the Pharaohs managed just 42% possession and seven shots.

In terms of World Cup qualification, Egypt went unbeaten in their group – picking up four wins and two draws to finishes seven points clear of Gabon.

They finished the first phase with a healthy goal difference of +6, having scored ten and conceded just four.

The Pharaohs suffered just a single defeat in 2021, securing nine wins and five draws before losing to Tunisia in December.

Across the entirety of 2021 and 2022 so far, Egypt have lost only three of their 22 games in all competitions.

On the flip side, Senegal registered five wins and one draw to finished eight points clear of second-place Togo in WCQ Group H.

The Lions of Teranga scored 15 goals while conceding just four, meaning they finished the first phase with a goal difference of +11.

From the start of 2021, Senegal have lost just one of their 23 encounters across all competitions. Needless to say, that is an impressive record.

It is also worth pointing out that Senegal head into Friday’s clash on an 18-match unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Head-to-head: Senegal have won each of their previous three games against Egypt without conceding a single goal.

When you look at the overall H2H stats, however, Egypt have the upper hand. The Pharaohs have claimed six wins in this fixture, while the Lions of Teranga have five.

Team news: It goes without saying that Mohamed Salah is Egypt’s main man. The Liverpool forward has bagged 28 goals and ten assists for his club this season.

Senegal’s squad is littered with big-name stars, including Sadio Mane (Liverpool), Edouard Mendy (Chelsea), Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli) and Idrissa Gueye (PSG).

Given that the Africa Cup of Nations final went all the way to penalties, Friday’s clash is destined to be another tight encounter.

For that reason, Forebet predicts that Senegal and Egypt will play out a low-scoring draw in Cairo.
