Rennes to steal narrow win at Montpellier

The French top flight action continues on Friday evening in Ligue 1 and features the upcoming clash between Montpellier and Rennes at the Stade de la Mosson with the hosts looking to post back-to-back wins in the domestic top flight.
The last time Montpellier posted back-to-back wins in Ligue 1 was before Christmas when they put together an impressive four-match winning streak, collecting victories over Metz, Clermont, Brest and Angers respectively but the hosts have since struggled to match their earlier form.
Four defeats within their subsequent six matches overall in Ligue 1 has seen Montpellier’s dreams of a top five finish slightly fade following losses against Strasbourg, Troyes, St Etienne and Lille although wins against Monaco and Lorient have at least kept the hosts in touch with the top five pack.
Form and results on home soil have generally been pretty reliable overall but two defeats in their last three home games suggest that the goals market may be a better option here, especially as five of their last eight games have resulted in over 2.5 goals.
Rennes also head into this Friday night’s encounter in Ligue 1 on the back of a win last time out when they recorded a resounding 4-1 thrashing of Troyes at home which has helped maintain Rennes’ current position of 5th spot in the French top flight.
However, although Rennes have also picked up earlier wins against Bordeaux and Brest with 6-0 and 2-0 victories respectively.
Both of these wins were achieved on home soil at their Roazhon Park where they’ve won nine out of their total of 12 league wins to date in this Ligue 1 campaign.
Five defeats out of their last eight matches overall therefore places Rennes in a delicate position in terms of backing an away win here especially as they’ve lost their last four away games on the trot, suffering defeats at Monaco, Lens, Clermont and PSG respectively.
Goals could feature here though as seven of Rennes’ last 10 matches overall have also seen over 2.5 goals and further goals look imminent on Friday night.
Rennes do hold a superior head-to-head record over Montpellier though in recent previous exchanges as the visitors have won four out of the last five meetings against their hosts and the visitors may well sneak a narrow win here as well.
