On Saturday afternoon, Freiburg host Mainz at the Europa Park Stadion, as the home team chases a top-four spot in the Bundesliga.
Freiburg’s good early season form has dropped off slightly of late, as the team from the Black Forest have now won just one of their last four matches in the German top-flight. Last time out, the home team suffered a 1-0 defeat against fellow surprise package Koln.
Despite the defeat last time out, Christian Streich’s team are still fifth-place in the table, just a point behind fourth-place Union Berlin in the race for a place in next seasons Champions League. Finishing in the Bundesliga top four would be a massive achievement for Streich’s team.
Freiburg are unbeaten in their last three home matches in the German top-flight, having recorded two wins and a draw. They have also suffered defeat in just two of their last 14 home matches in the Bundesliga.
Freiburg’s recent home matches in the league have been relatively high-scoring, with over two goals scored in their last six games.
Mainz’s recent league form has been incredibly inconsistent, as Bo Svensson’s team have won four and lost four of their last eight matches in the German top-flight. Last time out, the visitors recorded a 2-0 win over Hoffenheim.
The result means that there have been more than two goals scored in seven of Mainzf’s last nine games in the Bundesliga.
Despite their recent inconsistency, Mainz are just three points adrift of their hosts in the table. A win in this clash would certainly boost their chances of European football next season.
However, their recent away record in the Bundesliga does not bode well for an away win, as Mainz have lost their last five away matches in the German top-flight.
Forebet predicts that Freiburg will record a victory in a high-scoring encounter to boost their chances of finishing in the Champions League spots this season.
