Saint-Gilloise aim to continue table-topping form against Anderlecht
Union Saint-Gilloise vs Anderlecht - 30/01/2022
5145
Union Saint-Gilloise have not won the Belgian First Division since 1935. The club is on pace to win the title in Belgium, but the team will face a strong test on Sunday against Anderlecht.
Anderlecht head into the game in fourth place and 12 points behind the league leaders Saint-Gilloise. The Purple are coming off of a 2-0 midweek loss to Cercle Brugge at home. Manager Vincent Kompany is aiming to get the side back on track.
Saint-Gilloise are nine points ahead of reigning Belgian First Division champions Club Brugge. On Thursday night, Saint-Gilloise drew nil-nil with Club Brugge to take one step closer to the title.
No team in the First Division has scored more goals than Saint-Gilloise's 56. The team has also allowed the fewest goals to opponents with just 21.
Union go into the Sunday game having taken 14 points from the last 18 available in the First Division.
Anderlecht picked up 11 points from the last 18 points available in the league. Their 2-0 loss to Cercle Brugge ended a five-match unbeaten run in the First Division.
Since 2018, these teams have met four times in all competitions. Saint-Gilloise picked up three wins in those four games, including in the teams’ reverse First Division fixture this season.
Denuz Undav opened the scoring for Saint-Gilloise on 20 minutes, but Anderlecht’s Yari Verschaeren levelled the score just before halftime.
Undav scored a second goal for Saint-Gilloise just after the hour and Jean Thierry Lazare put the game out of reach with 15 minutes to play.
Kompany will be without two players for the trip to Saint-Gilloise. Michael Amir Murillo and Christian Kouame are both away on international duty. Kompany doesn’t have any new injury issues but the absences of Murillo and Kouame could be damaging.
Saint-Gilloise's Kacper Kozlowski is a doubt due to injury. Defender Koki Machida is also a doubt to play. Meanwhile, Kaoru Mitoma and Senne Lynen are both in line to return to the team for the game.
Bayern Munich’s Josh Zirkzee is on loan at Anderlecht this season. The Dutchman leads the team in goals with 10 in the First Division. Sergio Gomez has added 10 assists.
Undav leads Saint-Gilloise in goals with 18. He has accounted for 32% if Saint-Gilloise's goals this term. Undav scored twice against Anderlecht earlier this campaign and could be good value to do it again.
Like the previous fixture between these teams, Saint-Gilloise and Anderlecht should combine for over 3.5 goals as both teams score goals. Saint-Gilloise will continue their good form against Anderlecht with a win at full-time.
