Chelsea twice led against West Ham on Premier League matchday 15, but the Blues eventually lost 3-2 to the Londoners. The defeat sent Chelsea from first place to third place in the Premier League.
On Saturday, Chelsea welcome Leeds United with the aim of overturning their poor recent form. Following on from matchday 15’s loss to West Ham, Chelsea went to Russia and drew 3-3 with Zenit St. Petersburg on Champions League matchday 6.
The draw could be devastating in Chelsea’s bid to reclaim the Champions League. They finished second behind Juventus in their group and will now face a difficult round of 16 match.
Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United are fresh off of a 2-2 home draw with Brentford at Elland Road. Leeds United are on a three-match unbeaten streak. Chelsea cannot take the Yorkshire club lightly.
Leeds United are six points above the relegation zone and points are needed by any means possible for them to move further away from danger.
Last season, Chelsea defeated Leeds United 3-1 at Stamford Bridge. Leeds United led early thanks to a goal from Patrick Bamford, but Olivier Giroud equalised before halftime. Kurt Zouma and Christian Pulisic scored goals in the second half to help Chelsea to the victory.
Going into matchday 16, Chelsea’s defence has conceded nine goals, the fewest in the Premier League. Leeds United, on the other hand, have conceded 22 scores to opponents across 15 matches. The Whites’ defence has been better this season than last when it conceded goals galore.
Tuchel may be without up to seven players for Saturday’s game. Chelsea cannot afford to drop points with Manchester City and Liverpool ahead of them in the table.
Midfielder Jorginho is a doubt due courtesy of a lower back injury. He could be passed fit to play on Saturday morning, however. Mateo Kovacic is ruled out through injury along with Trevoh Chalobah, N’Golo Kante, and full-back Ben Chilwell. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is a major doubt.
Bielsa is without defender Robin Koch. Fellow defender Pascal Struijk is a doubt after suffering a groin strain. Midfielder Kalvin Phillips is ruled out of the game with a hamstring issue. Liam Cooper and Patrick Bamford are major doubts to travel to London.
Chelsea claimed all three points at Stamford Bridge in 2020-21. The Blues are not in the best of form and are winless in back-to-back games. However, Tuchel’s team should eke past Leeds United with a win to nil and under 1.5 goals.
