Newcastle United and Burnley set for disappoint stalemate

Newcastle United will welcome Burnley to St. James’ Park on Saturday for a massive six-point fixture. The Magpies are at the foot of the Premier League table heading into matchday 15, while Burnley are 18th.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies has taken seven points from 42 available this season and are coming off of a disappointing 1-1 draw with Norwich City in midweek. Six points separate Newcastle United from 17th-place Watford ahead of the weekend.

Burnley, are three points behind Watford and a win coupled with a Watford loss to Manchester City would see Burnley move out of the relegation zone. Of the two teams, Burnley are in better form compared to Newcastle United.

Sean Dyche’s team is unbeaten in five of their last six league matches. Burnley’s last three matches in the Premier League finished as draws. The Clarets are coming off of a nil-nil draw with Wolverhampton in midweek. Despite the result, Burnley showed plenty of life in attack.

This is the second meeting of the season between Newcastle United and Burnley. In August, they met at St. James’ Park in the Carabao Cup. The match ended nil-nil at full-time with Burnley winning on penalties.

Both Newcastle United and Burnley have drawn seven matches this season. It is the joint-most draws in the Premier League.

Newcastle United manager Howe will be without centre-back Ciaran Clark. The defender will serve a suspension after being sent off versus Norwich City.

Howe will have duo of Matt Ritchie and Jamaal Lascelles back following their suspensions against Norwich City. Paul Dummett is ruled out of the match due to an injury. He has missed much of the current campaign.

Dyche will have defender James Tarkowski available following a suspension. Midfielder Ashley Westwood is also available following a suspension. Forward Ashley Barnes remains ruled out with an injury.

Newcastle United are unbeaten in four consecutive matches versus Burnley.

The Magpies claimed two wins and two draws in all competitions during that run of form. Burnley have failed to win on their last six trips to St. James’ Park, giving Newcastle United hope of a first win this season.

Yes, that is correct, Newcastle United are still searching for a first win this season in all competitions. They have a 0W-7D-7L record in the Premier League. The Magpies have also conceded the league’s most goals with 30.

Despite Newcastle United’s good record against Burnley at St. James’ Park, don’t expect them to end their long winless run. Burnley should claim a second straight draw at St. James’ Park in 2021-22. Expect this to be a low-scoring game with under 2.5 goals and both teams scoring.
