Can Switzerland frustrate Italy in Group A?

Italy will aim to build on their impressive 3-0 victory over Turkey when Switzerland visit Rome’s Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Switzerland could only manage a 1-1 draw with Wales in their opening match – leaving them two points behind first-place Italy in Group A.

Italy put in a hugely impressive display to dispatch Turkey last Friday, although it took them a little while to find their feet.

A Merih Demiral own goal gave Roberto Mancini’s side the lead on 53 minutes, before Ciro Immobile and Lorenzo Insigne completed the rout.

Remarkably, the Italians racked up a whopping 24 shots (eight on target) in their opening game, while Turkey failed to register a single attempt on target.

It is also worth pointing out that Mancini’s men completely dominated possession last time out, seeing 64% of the ball.

Italy’s unbeaten streak now stands at 28 matches in all competitions, with only five draws coming in that time.

Let’s not forget that Italy have also won each of their previous nine games, scoring 28 goals without conceding.

Switzerland are enjoying an impressive run of their own, too, although they have only gone eight games without defeat (six wins, two draws).

The Swiss were on a six-match winning streak heading into the European Championship, but Wales ended that run.

It’s safe to say that Switzerland dominated proceedings on Saturday, seeing 65% possession while registering 18 shots in the process.

However, Breel Embolo’s 49th-minute opener was cancelled out by Kieffer Moore with 15 minutes remaining.

Head-to-head: In the previous 57 meetings between these two nations, Switzerland have only managed to claim seven wins.

That said, the last three matches between Italy and Switzerland have ended level, while under 3.5 goals have been scored in each of their previous nine meetings.

Team news: PSG full-back Alessandro Florenzi looks set to miss Wednesday’s clash after sustaining a calf injury on Friday. Giovanni Di Lorenzo is likely to deputise.

The Swiss came through their tournament-opener unscathed, although head coach Vladimir Petkovic could be tempted to shake up his starting XI.

Although Italy were on a completely different level to Turkey, Switzerland have enough quality to trouble Mancini’s team.

With that in mind, Forebet predicts that Italy and Switzerland will produce a low-scoring draw on Wednesday.
