Why Vitinha is more than just a cog in the PSG machine

Vitinha might not be the flashiest player, but he is certainly the most important one at PSG.

People might assume it’s Ousmane Dembélé—and yes, Dembélé is electric—but what makes Dembélé shine is, in large part, the work Vitinha does behind him.

The concept of building up play at PSG has shifted, not by design, but out of necessity after Kylian Mbappé’s departure. Luís Campos found the answer in Vitinha, and that choice is proving to be a masterstroke.

Against Aston Villa in the Champions League quarterfinal, Vitinha recorded 164 touches and completed 148 out of 152 passes.

This wasn’t some casual runout against amateurs—this was a high-stakes European clash. And yet, up against two of the Premier League’s most capable midfielders in Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans, Vitinha made it look easy. He completed a pass every 35 seconds, and they couldn’t lay a finger on him.

He covered an astonishing amount of ground, led the match in progressive passes, and created three chances for teammates.

Just as impressively, he had three shots, won the ball twice, intercepted three passes, and cleared danger once—all while anchoring the midfield. A complete performance in every sense.

Vitinha isn’t the new face of PSG. He’s not the poster boy of a post-Mbappé era. But he is, without a doubt, the best player on the team.

The club’s playing style has evolved. The midfield trio of João Neves, Fabián Ruiz, and Vitinha is balanced and intelligent.

The forward line is full of gifted dribblers, but none of them are too big to press or play without the ball. The full-backs are among the best in the world, and the center-backs can hold a high line.

And yet, it’s Vitinha who gives the system its soul. He’s everything at once—a six, an eight, and a 10. He can shield the defence, dictate tempo from deep, slide into pockets to keep possession ticking, or break lines with a final pass.

After a lukewarm loan spell at Wolverhampton and Messi’s reported comment that he “wasn’t that good” and didn’t belong at PSG, most players would’ve faded. But Vitinha didn’t. His career hasn’t followed a straight line—he’s stumbled, been doubted, and come out stronger. That adversity forged a winner.

He’s not physically dominant and doesn’t win many duels, but his work rate is elite. He’s always in motion, always reading the game, always offering himself as an option. That’s how he pulled off 152 passes in a knockout Champions League match.

His football IQ is exceptional too: he sees space before it opens, senses danger before it forms, and rarely makes the wrong choice.

It wasn’t PSG’s decision to end the Galácticos era—Neymar and Mbappé made that call by leaving. This team wasn’t built around Vitinha. He was meant to be a cog in the machine, not the engine itself.

But while Dembélé might grab the headlines, Vitinha is PSG’s true driving force—the clearest reason why this version of the club finally feels like a real team.
