Which Premier League teams are the most aggressive (carded)?

The Premier League will play round No. 24 this weekend. With the majority of teams completing 23 fixtures, we have seen plenty of trends form.

In a league that prides itself on letting teams play and referees (trying?) being lenient, we have seen several teams rack up yellow and red cards.

One of the trends the Premier League has compared to La Liga, Ligue 1, Serie A, or the Bundesliga – the other four teams in the top five leagues – is the lack of sending offs.

Even with VAR, the Premier League doesn’t often see red cards. Indeed, it seems, for whatever reason, VAR rarely wants to overrule a referee’s on-field decision.

But with 23 rounds down and plenty of cards dished out, which Premier League teams are the most aggressive?

There have been over 1,000 yellow cards handed out in the Premier League this season. Of course, red cards have been handed out far fewer times. Thirty-one red cards have been produced by Premier League refs.

The two teams that top the yellow card standings are two clubs going in different directions. Southampton have recorded 66 yellow cards. The Saints are on their way back to the Championship, having had a poor season following promotion.

Chelsea have also tallied 66 yellow cards. While Southampton have been in the bottom third of the table all season, Chelsea were a title contender as recently as December.

The number of yellow cards handed out to Chelsea likely shows their struggles in defending against opponents. However, Chelsea’s defence has conceded just 30 times, compared to Southampton’s league-leading 53 goals allowed.

But which teams have received the fewest yellow cards? The award for fewest yellow cards go to Brentford and Tottenham, who have 35 and 43 yellow cards respectively.

These teams are far from aggressive tacklers on the pitch. In Tottenham’s case, they are often criticised for being weak and lacking a backbone. Indeed, Spurs lost their last four Premier League games, conceding nine times.

Brentford are more about defensive organisation and pressure rather than tough tackling. It is that organisation that has kept the Bees in the Premier League.

One of the most surprising card stats involves Arsenal. The Gunners lead the Premier League in red cards, with four.

Mikel Arteta’s team is in the Premier League title race heading into matchday No. 24. Yet, a red card this weekend against Manchester City could all but end their pursuit for a first title in over 20 in over years.
